The Beach Hotel, Minehead: Open for bookings!

The Beach Hotel nestles neatly between the Quantocks and Exmoor National Park in the ancient seaport of Minehead. This landmark hotel was adopted by YMCA Somerset Coast in 2013 and has since been lovingly restored to its former glory – with a few added features. It now offers luxury hotel accommodation and conference and meeting facilities. It is home to Minehead’s Railway Museum and Café, The Minehead Musicians Festival – and of course a fantastic restaurant which offers a scrumptious menu serving delicious food to suit any occasion, prepared from local ingredients and presented simply and elegantly.

As we mentioned, (and will proudly mention again!), we are also a charity. In 2013 YMCA Somerset Coast saw the old hotel as an opportunity to restore the heart of a community. Today The Beach Hotel has taken to its new role valiantly and provides a place to offer training and apprenticeships to young people who want to show and develop their talents in hospitality and as chefs. Under guidance of our award winning Head Chef and mentor and many other members of our passionate team.

Our love of coastal life and passion for comfort and leisure creates a culture that is finely balanced. It’s one of putting your feet up and stepping outside, of relaxing or being active. Whether you are a couple looking for a getaway, young or old, a family here with your children, or travelling with man’s best friend come and join us to see for yourself.

We want to inspire you to discover what’s here. Look for cosy, secluded corners tucked within busy, wide-open places. There’s something for everyone and every mood. Minehead itself offers a superb destination for anyone seeking a traditional seaside holiday and is also known as the gateway to Exmoor National Park. It is equally suitable for those who want a relaxing break or an action packed holiday of walking, cycling, horse riding or extreme sports.

Our setting provides a great base to explore Somerset and Exmoor. Minehead is a real hidden gem for kite surfing and water sports in Somerset and North Devon. Yet, is still quiet enough to explore some unchartered territory, or just relax in our Lounge. Your break with us can be whatever you want to make it really.

Exmoor Food Fest offer:
2 course £15 lunchtimes and the 3 course £22.50 evenings Tuesday to Saturday starting from 19/02/18 to the 28/02/18.

Clavelshay Barn: Open for bookings!

1912230_874098189282805_7213690699593471032_n

Clavelshay Barn Restaurant promises “a taste of the countryside” and the reality does not disappoint – offering top quality local produce in unspoilt idyllic surroundings . The restaurant is set in a converted barn on a working dairy farm, nestled in its own secluded valley, yet is within easy reach of Taunton, Bridgwater and the M5.

The barn itself has been sympathetically converted by owners Bill & Sue Milverton, retaining original elm beams and using oak and cedar from the farm for the floor and staircase. A changing display of work by local artists and natural wood furniture complete the contemporary country  feel – a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere in which to dine.

Experienced Head Chef, Olivier Certain, uses only the finest ingredients from local suppliers and his experience and flair to produce food with great flavour.

Marseille-born Olivier moved to Somerset in 1998 following his Michelin star training in La Bonne Etape ,  Chateau Arnoux, and Les Roches in Le Lavandou.   Olivier had  a successful few years with Andrew Dixon at Andrews on the  Weir, Porlock Weir, where he helped Andrew maintain his 3 AA Rosettes. In 2006 he joined Woods in Dulverton as Head Chef where he achieved 2 rosettes and the accolade of Somerset Dining Pub of the Year 2008, 2010 and 2011.

With Olivier at the helm in the kitchen, Clavelshay Barn had a very successful 2016, winning 7 awards for its food and service.

All dishes are made on site, with the exception of the tempting ice cream, which comes from a local dairy farm. Bread is made daily and even the water on the table is from the farm’s own spring.  Free-range eggs are from the farm’s Maran & Light Sussex hens and herbs, vegetables, salads and flowers from the walled garden.  The menu is deliberately small but changes frequently to make the best use of seasonal produce.

To complement the delicious food, a fully licensed bar stocks  Exmoor, Cotleigh & Quantock beers, Sheppy’s Cider, local apple juice ,Luscombe Organic soft drinks and an interesting and expanding wine list, including award winning  Oatley wine from Cannington.

Clavelshay Barn offers superb service, wheelchair access and efficient and friendly staff.

And if you’re looking for an unforgettable setting for your special day, Clavelshay Barn is the answer. Intimate parties of up to 50 guests are catered for elegantly in the 18thC    barn restaurant, while a marquee can be sited for larger celebrations of up to 100 guests.

Whether it’s a wedding, family party, a business event or a conference, you’ll be treated to excellent personal service, delicious locally sourced food from tailor-made menus, a relaxed atmosphere and a stunning rural backdrop.

About Thomas Carr

Thomas Carr prides himself on producing food of a consistently high standard, establishing a passionate, dynamic and creative dining/kitchen environment. Always experimenting with ingredients, avours and techniques to push the boundaries of food and exceed the expectations of each customer.

Thomas has always been driven by a fundamental love of cooking and food, always seeking to learn and grow as a chef.

His journey started when he was employed as head chef in 2002 at the Beachcomber Café in Woolacombe, Devon – his hometown. From here Thomas moved to the Watersmeet Hotel, again in Woolacombe, where he was Chef De Partie for 5 years between 2004 and 2009.

In March 2009 Thomas went to work under renowned chef Nathan Outlaw at his Seafood and Grill Restaurant @ The St Enodoc Hotel in Cornwall. Originally taken on by Nathan Outlaw as a Sous chef, Thomas’ potential was quickly noticed and in February 2010 he was appointed as Head Chef at the brand new ‘Restaurant Nathan Outlaw’. Under Thomas the restaurant received two Michelin stars within a year of opening, along with numerous other accolades and awards within the hospitality industry. As well as the day to day running of the restaurant, Thomas also participated in outside events linked to the restaurant and Nathan Outlaw; including a ‘pop up’ restaurant in London and several food festivals/events.

In 2013 Thomas returned to North Devon to take up a role as executive chef at The Coach House, Kentisbury Grange, allowing him another opportunity to work with a renowned chef in Michael Caines MBE. Thomas built a full team from scratch and achieved 2 AA Rosettes within 6 months of opening as well as a full entry into the 2014 Trencherman’s Guide.

In the spring of 2014 Thomas was presented with an opportunity to fulfil a lifetime dream of owning his own restaurant in the harbour town of Ilfracombe, North Devon. The mixture of a bustling, up and coming area and fresh line caught fish delivered to restaurant on an almost daily basis has made for a hugely successful start in business.

And it was at the end of September in 2016, that Thomas received a call so many chefs can only dream of. A call from the Editor of the Michelin Guide, asking him to attend the first ever live presentation of the guide on October 3rd.

Michelin Star chef hits crowdfunding target for new restaurant in 8 days

After launching a campaign on crowdfunding website Kickstarter, North Devon based chef Thomas Carr has reached his target after just 8 days. The new restaurant will now open in Ilfracombe, named Thomas Carr Seafood & Grill, and join Thomas’ fine dining restaurant ‘Thomas Carr at the Olive Room’ in the North Devon town.

Recruitment campaigns and work have now started to open the new venue, in the old Lamb Hotel building on Ilfracombe’s High Street. A launch event is scheduled to take place on March 15th.

‘’We hope to be able to get partly open during February, then build up to a full launch with the event on March 15th’’ said Thomas, ‘’We’ve been blown away by all the support we’ve received. Not just in the money raised, but also the kind words and support’’. A target of £15,000 was set and reached, with funds raised now at £17,990. ‘’We don’t want to stop here, the reality of a new venture like this is it needs a fair amount to get everything up and running. We’re now all set to open, but to do things the way we’d really like to do them, we want to keep that total rising’’

In order to keep attracting more backers, the team behind the project have added more ‘rewards’ for ba

ckers to choose. Backer’s can choose to pledge anything from £10 – which will get your name printed on the restaurant’s planned ‘wall of fame’ right up to £8000 – if you’d like Thomas to cater an event or wedding for 50 guests. The campaign ends on January 27th 2018.

‘’Crowdfunding this way is a win/win scenario all round’’ continued Thomas, ‘’We’ll get well needed funds towards getting things off the ground, but the backers have all backed rewards they know are really good value, such as meals at the restaurants and even dinner parties in their own homes’’. Thomas will be visiting 5 different homes to cook meals for backers and their guests.

To back the project in exchange for a variety of rewards,
you can pledge by clicking the link below, or simply by Googling ‘Thomas Carr Kickstarter’
